This exhibition continues my ‘Altered States’ project where I explore ideas of embedded labour and repeated gesture using clay.
Our drive to connect through touch, to learn through reiteration and to use our hands to make and do is being challenged by consumerism, mechanisation and the enticements of visual media. In addition, the COVID 19 pandemic has made us fearful of touch as a potential pathway for the transmission of disease. My goal with this body of work is to offer a reconsideration of unfettered tactile sensory experience.
I have a ceramics practice in which I have necessarily evolved a language of touch. I regularly experience the sense of my hands ‘knowing’ how far the material can be pushed. This collection of objects and images captures and presents the touch evidence of my hands manipulating clay
