THE HUMAN RACE
SEBASTIAN JARMULA
21 MAY-12 JUNE

The Human Race is a conceptual race-track sculpture depicting the burnout of the human species by route of fossil fuel consumption. Melted die-cast toy cars are arranged in competition, driving to nowhere in particular and as quickly as possible.
What are we competing for, or even driving towards, if not for the collective preservation of our species and planet? The Human Race asks: what is currently on the other end of the finishing line?
Sebastian Jarmula is an artist from Calgary, the petroleum capital of Canada. As a boy, he played with toy cars, primed to conform one day to the adult world of sprawling highways. Sebastian gave his teal 2005 Toyota Corolla to his brother and moved to Australia. He now makes art in Melbourne.
