SCAVENGERS

CURATED BY ANDREA HUGHES, OLGA TSARA AND POLLY HOLLYOAK

6 to 21 December 2019

Curated by artists, Polly Hollyoak, Andrea Hughes and Olga Tsara, the exhibition addresses the artist’s role in making statements about consumerism, body image, art, feminism and the human condition using scavenged and appropriated images and materials and challenges concepts of originality and authorship.

The participating artists are not from the generations who invented appropriation as a means of critiquing consumerism and mass culture; instead they use appropriation as a natural option in their artists’ ‘toolkit’. The individual artists will bring their own voices to the exhibition, creating a broad spectrum of ideas and showing a variety of approaches to using found imagery.

Some artists are making political statements about image nausea, some explore historical images, otherssatirize mass media, yet others are exploring deep emotions springing from nostalgia, questions of identity and belonging.

Participating artists: Eddie Botha, Annette Chang, Maz Dixon, Polly Hollyoak, Savina Hopkins, Andrea Hughes, Empire of Stuff, Leah Mariani, Andrea Sinclair, Liz Sontag (Tinky), Kelly Sullivan, Olga Tsara.
