MEN GO TO SEA,WOMEN DON'T
NATASHA MANNERS
21 FEBRUARY -14 MARCH 2020

Historically in Iceland, many women went to work out at sea as fisherwomen carrying out the same roles as the men they worked alongside. There they earnt money, respect and independence they could not on land. As ideas of the ‘feminine woman’ became dominant in Icelandic society women were forced from the sea into the home and forgotten from history.
This project is an investigation and recognition of the historically significant role of fisherwomen, mourning the change in society that caused them to all but disappear. The video depicts the traditional methods of producing harðfiskur (dried fish), an Icelandic staple, poignantly swapping fish for woolen replicas presented it in the context of the contemporary home.
