I photographed the abandoned Neukölln Krankenhaus (Hospital) several times between 2012 and 2015. The hospital has a fascinating history — it opened in 1917, was for many years the largest of its kind in Germany, but by the 21st century, it was an eerie, desolate ruin.
It lay abandoned for decades, but eventually, its potential for redevelopment attracted corporate property developers, and today it is a shell of its former self. This work has particular significance now, at a time when much of Berlin’s architectural heritage is being erased in the name of corporate greed.
