CULTURE SHOCK REMEDIES

KATIA SILKOVA

13 September to 5 October 2019

Katia Silkova was born in Russia, raised in Ukraine and migrated to Melbourne with her family in 1996. Katia's art practice spans across painting, photography, sculpture and site-specific installation, engaging with notions of time, place and cultural identity.

In Culture Shock Remedies, I will further investigate the influences of my cross-cultural experiences on my changing place making practices. I will use The Cupboard space as an essential aspect for a site-specific installation, which will indicate an emerging sense of place and belonging influenced by merging cultures and environments.

The process of creating a multi-sensory environment that combines elements from my different homelands acts as a remedy from the initial culture shock and aids in reconnecting self to fragments of my many cultural experiences past and present.'
