EXPERIMENTS IN AUTOMATISM
JOSEPH WICHMAN
22JUL-13AUG

These pieces depict a range of subjects and emotional states conveyed through a non-representational style. Shape, form, line and colour is explored with the objective of achieving a particular aesthetic. My work seeks a perpetual examination of restraint, freedom, contrast, fusion and balance– and positive and negative space.
These works are born from an automatic drawing method, where the hand is allowed to move randomly across the page. Hence, these works exhibit a sub-conscious process and an application of chance as a base for the intentional development of an image.
I have executed these pieces in a spirit of experimentation, with a strong desire to create something singular and cohesive.
In addition to their appearance, that recalls a surrealistic process, these works can be labelled as outsider art, because I have had little formal art training.
