JANICE GOBEY

31 March to 22 April 2017

With undergraduate studies in Psychology and Sociology, Janice Gobey has a fascination with people and the human condition. Her practice has explored the obsession with the white wedding, love, sexual politics and more recently trauma and healing. Her current work has a concern for global politics and the resurgence of nationalism – having grown up in Apartheid South Africa, she is interested in an alternate dialogue of peace, healing and tolerance.

Gobey works in oil painting and installation, she enjoys the convergence of fur, skin, hair, drapery – translating these complex materials into a 2D format. Gobey graduated from the University of Melbourne’s VCA with the Masters in Visual Art.

Her work has been exhibited in Melbourne, Berlin, New York and London. Gobey was one of the artists selected for the Linden New Art Innovators Progam in 2014, and shortlisted for the Sunshine Coast Art Prize as well as the Toyota Spirit Sculpture Prize.

Gobey has also been selected to participate in “The Other Art Fair” by Saatchi Art and later this year she will undertake a 3-month residency at the Leipzig International Artist Program in Germany.
