Marking Time – despair and hope is a series of sketchbook drawings and larger drawings that were made during a particularly challenging time in my life. This body of work is unapologetically introspective and speculative. Made with one purpose, to keep my focus on the belief that to stop is to give up. I see each mark drawn as a step, one drawn after the other, created only to keep at bay the incessant anxiety and ever-present self-talk that everything was not going to be ok.
All artists set themselves constraints or else the excess of possibilities overwhelm and derail any real desire to investigate an idea. Mine are as follows. Each work examines the possibilities that can occur when the subject of the work is, the length of mark, the pressure of mark, the angle of mark, and the space between marks.
