TO SLASH

HAYDN ALLEN

31 Aug to 22 Sep 2018

To Slash continues the artist’s exploration of play and performance in an observation of sexuality and gendered spaces. An installation of found plastics reflects on the male homosexual sexual experience. The abject becomes toy; objects are trialled and tested before becoming stratified through installation. Sites of public sex, urination, and the ‘hunt’ for a sexual partner are contemplated in presentation of the readymade; this content makes reference to the historical art canon’s de-odorising of patriarchies.
This work is just one iteration of a wider studio practice which uses discarded and recycled materials belonging to suburban, spiritual, and sexual territories. Allen’s work manifests as performances and installations which are often both boldly coloured and physically dirty; playfully masochistic.
