Serena Lumley uses the motif of the void, exaggerated shadow and simplified forms to explore psychological unease and the unhomely through still life painting. Serena uses these elements in conjunction with a sensitive application of paint, emotive use of colour and a heightened sense of tone to subvert traditional expectations of still life, in order to create an uneasy and ambiguous atmosphere.
Through this series of paintings, Serena explores and reflects upon the way our emotional life shapes our outlook on the world and how we view our place within it, aiming to present images that invite pause and contemplation.
