WHERE I DRAW THE LINE

DEBRA J. MARSHALL

8 to 30 November 2019

In this project, I investigate the psychological tension between restriction and movement by using physical barriers and self-imposed rules to produce large scale drawings. Movement is recorded as a visual trace on rolls of paper, revealing my attempts to negotiate these barriers and rules. For example, by employing a repetitive line as a restrictive element, I can explore themes of control and constriction, and express how human movement is still evident within this constraint.

In these drawings, I attempt to reproduce each line perfectly. However, the body’s own trace is visible in the aberrations between the lines. I use this tension between the attempt to make a perfect replicated line, and the impossibility of doing so, as a metaphor for concerns of movement narrowed by constriction, and how the aberrant human hand is evident, even within these restrictions.
