Memory and remembrance is the silent film of our personal history that plays short moments of past joy on the cinema screen of our minds. Within the thin smoke like vail of nostalgic memory is the promise of capture and expectation that an authentic past can be revisited through that screen. Through an autobiographical lens of a galaxy far far away I aim to connect my nostalgic longing for the past with the reality of my present-day existence.
Ashley D Bird’s practice aims to unpack concepts of contemporary versions of nostalgia specifically linked to objects of play and actions of childhood imagination creation. He employ’s toys and games as vehicles to investigate the inner spaces of memory, melancholia, nostalgia and imagination. Tangled within the surface of these objects tactile, used and played with traces of childhood hold the intangible ghost and smoke of memory between the past and the present.
