...OUTGROW YOU."
ANNA MCDERMOTT
11 May to 2 June 2018

Using the disembodied frame as a starting point Anna McDermott investigates how the body may be held, suspended or contained within fixed boundaries. Creating a precarious space for the viewer to navigate she challenges how these thresholds may be extended and transformed. Instability is therefore favoured over resolution as multiple mediums and materials disrupt, overlap and inform one another. A play between concealing/revealing, holding/releasing conveys a consistent desire to move beyond any given state.
Rather than attempting to define the body, this mixed media installation provides viewers with opportunities for physical exchange and bodily projection; mimicking the negotiations and relationships we become connected to as our bodies move through every moment and gesture in time. Through this, the work questions how we may “...outgrow” both ourselves and that which surrounds us - situating the body in a constant state of becoming.
