TOGETHER - APART

ALYSIA REES

11 May to 2 June 2018

Considering what separates the self from, and compels it toward others, Together - Apart explores the interconnection and disconnection of self and other and what surrounds them. Emotive organic shapes reference both a physical and psychological reality and have been manipulated to fit rigid forms. The works examine these dynamics utilising the partitioned forms to place pressure on the structures with their bulky mass. As the partitioned forms perform a balancing act, they fit, match and mirror one another, and although coupled together they sit physically apart separated by the unyielding constructs.
Like relations between selves, the works are physically divided by distance and space throughout the gallery. Yet a closer look reveals that they belong together. Like elements of an unknown language, they mimic and echo each other as repetitious patterns in correspondence across the space.
